A ToDon’tList Method use case:

How we used
the ToDon’tList Method
to build

Brandbook.io

People often wonder how I actually use my ToDon’tList method.
I would like to take you with me, as we used the method to build Brandbook.io.

What is Brandbook.io?

Ben Konrath and I started Brandbook.io as a platform for design studios to create online brand manuals for their clients and make their design assets available.
Clients can take over the management of their brand manual after everything is set and ready for launch.

Using the ToDon’tList Method, we can build a platform with just 2 people and still have amazing clients. Scroll down to learn how.

1.

We don’t have
investors.

Brandbook.io was built entirely independently — without outside investors. We relied solely on our own time, skills, and network. With no investor pressure or imposed targets, we remain completely free to make our own decisions.
Our values are to make a good product in collaboration with our customers and studios. User-aligned, instead of investor-aligned.

2.

We don’t have
an office.

We don’t have a fixed office. We work from wherever we are, whenever it suits us. This flexibility means we have no unnecessary overhead. We leverage modern online tools (including Brandbook itself) to make a kick ass product.

3.

We don’t have
a sales team.

Clients typically look for an online brand manual when collaborating with a design studio on a new identity. That’s why our approach is to partner directly with design studios. Clients naturally trust their studio’s recommendation of Brandbook.io far more than a cold pitch from a salesperson. Studios also benefit by earning a substantial annual fee for each Brandbook they provide — creating a win-win partnership that grows organically.

4.

We don’t take part
in the tech rat race.

No enshitification. We only add features that genuinely improve Brandbook.io, never just for the sake of more options. This intentional approach keeps our interface clean, simple, and intuitive for both designers and their clients. We also avoid any AI-related complications: all content remains fully owned by studios and their clients, never used to train AI models. That’s the freedom that comes with true independence.

5.

We don’t have
a helpdesk.

We don’t use chatbots that misunderstand your questions or automated systems that send you in circles. Instead, clients have our direct contact details, so they can reach out to us personally. This lets us build real relationships and learn firsthand how we can improve. That said, our interface is so intuitive that clients rarely need to contact us. Sometimes, we’re the ones checking in just to stay connected.

6.

We don’t have
an AI side hustle.

We don’t have side hustles selling customer data, user-unfriendly engagement targets, or dark patterns to satisfy investor-led sales targets.
We will never use or sell users’ content to train AI models. That’s the freedom that comes with true independence.
And all data is hosted in the EU and stays there.

7.

We don’t have
subscription options.

We offer a single plan at one straightforward price; what you see is what you get. This approach eliminates unnecessary complexity, avoiding legacy accounts or confusion when rolling out new features. Whenever we introduce something new, it’s automatically included for everyone.

8.

We don’t have
artificial growth targets.

We’re not interested in world domination. Our goal is to create a product we truly believe in, one that aligns with our values and standards= — without compromise. We strive for a healthy balance between quality, profitability, and staying personally connected to everything we build.

9.

We don’t spend
all our time to Brandbook.io

Using the ToDon’tList Method saves significant time while maintaining high productivity and effectiveness.
We invest this extra time in other projects, ensuring we don’t become isolated and remain receptive to fresh perspectives.
The inspiration and knowledge we gain from these projects continually enrich Brandbook.io. And in turn, our other projects.
